On 29 June 2016, an exhibition of contemporary highlights from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum’s collection – titled 16/60 – will open at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s Bird Street Gallery.
One of the artworks to be exhibited... Migrants by Penny Siopis
This exhibition forms part of the Art Museum’s 60th celebrations, and represents a selection of the top works collected by the Museum between the years 2000 and 2016. It reflects on the diversity of the Art Museum’s unique contemporary collection.
The exhibition will be opened by Dr Melanie Hillebrand who retired recently after 29 years as Director of the Art Museum. Guests are welcome from 17.30.
The exhibition comes a week after the official launch of the Museum’s birthday celebrations, which kick off at the Art Museum (1 Park Drive, Central) with an opening of the Museum’s main highlights exhibition titled: YEYETHU, SONKE (THIS BELONGS TO ALL OF US): 60 YEARS OF COLLECTING on 22 June 2016.
On display in the 16/60 exhibition are works by top South African artists Penny Siopis, Steven Cohen, Wim Botha, Nicholas Hlobo, Nomusa Makhubu, Diane Victor and Zanele Muholi, among others. Local Eastern Cape highlights include Churchill Madikida, Andrieta Wentzel and James Reed. A special display of ceramic work by former Port Elizabeth Technikon (now NMMU) lecturer and well known ceramicist, Hylton Nel, will also be on display.
This multiple media exhibition of videos, installations and large scale paintings and drawings fits flawlessly in the new dynamic space of the Bird Street Gallery. The Gallery, which is housed in the historical Fleming House Building, was opened in 2015.
The exhibition ends on 22 July 2016.
