Horizon 2020, the European Union’s biggest research and innovation programme yet, will be showcased at a workshop at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University on 25 April – to inform academia and industry about the programme and its opportunities for funding.
Geared towards economic growth and job creation, Horizon 2020 has made nearly €80 billion (R1,3 trillion) of funding available over the seven year period, 2014 to 2020.
The Department of Science and Technology is presenting the workshop, which has been organised by NMMU’s Innovation Office, whose director Jaci Barnett is the University’s Legal Entity Appointed Representative (LEAR), for Horizon 2020 calls for research proposals.
“Many researchers, including our EU counterparts, are unaware that South Africa is eligible to apply for Horizon 2020 funding,” said Barnett. “In most cases, projects need to be in collaboration with an EU partner and at least one other partner.”
The aim of the workshop is to provide information to local and regional researchers and innovators on the latest calls and thematic areas that are open for proposals, and how to join research consortia with EU partners.
Barnett said specific Horizon 2020 themes relevant to NMMU’s research areas included:
Presenting alongside the Department of Science and Technology at the workshop will be representatives from Horizon 2020’s National Contact Point in South Africa. They include Toto Matshediso, Dr Bongani Ndimba, Kogi Iyer, Peacemaker Dlamini and Bheki Hadebe.
The session will provide a comprehensive overview of Horizon 2020 opportunities, as well as national support mechanisms.
Horizon 2020’s goal is to ensure Europe produces world-class science, removes barriers to innovation and makes it easier for the public and private sectors to work together in delivering innovation. It emphasizes excellent science, industrial leadership and tackling societal challenges.
