Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University is calling on all its academically-deserving, but financially- needy students to urgently apply for funding by going to the homepage of our website at www.nmmu.ac.za and clicking on the NEED FINANCIAL SUPPORT? tab in the middle of the page.
The link (http://www.nsfas.org.za/NSFAS/STUDENTS/APPLY) will take you to the NSFAS application page which after 30 November – when NSFAS closes its application - will be replaced by an identical NMMU application page.
Students can apply regardless of whether they have outstanding debt or not.
NMMU is committed to ensuring that academically-deserving students who are in financial need are not prevented from accessing higher education and succeeding in their studies simply because they do not have the means to enroll at universities.
The decision to urgently call for academically-deserving, but financially needy students was unanimously supported during a special Council meeting on 21 November where it was agreed to create progressive opportunities for financially needy students to access studies at the University.
This agreement means that students who meet the criteria for funding from the government’s National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) but could not be assisted, will still be financially-supported by the University using the same pay-back loan system. See http://www.nsfas.org.za/NSFAS/STUDENTS/PAYING_BACK
Your application for funding for 2016 will automatically examine whether you have any outstanding debt. If you do, this debt will be covered by NMMU NSFAS funding with the normal NSFAS conditions. This means your present debt will not impact on your study plans for next year, providing that you meet all academic requirements. This will be determined by your 2015 November exam results.
The new arrangements that come in the wake of the national #FeesMustFall movement when a 0% fee increase was announced, include:
Please note that you may only apply once.
The outcome of applications – assessed according to the greatest financial needs in relation to academic achievement - will only be known in early January. Successful candidates will be notified via text messages and e-mail.
