NELSON Mandela’s legacy lives on in so many ways, not least in the annual celebration of his birthday, which staff and students at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University celebrated in innumerable ways.
DOING GOOD FOR MADIBA … A video capturing the comments of Grade 11 and 12 learners from across the province, about what they intend to do to honour the legacy of former president Nelson Mandela, was today (18 July) released by Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, via its social media platforms. The video includes comments from the learners, who formed part of the 1000-strong group who attended NMMU’s Accounting Winter Schools this holiday. The learners – together with students from NMMU’s Pinnacle Leadership Programme (holding the letters) – celebrate Mandela Day at NMMU’s Madiba Shirt, one of the University’s public art displays.
As in the past, NMMU staff and students honoured the university’s namesake as individuals, departments, schools, units or even facilities by doing what is meaningful for them in line with Madiba’s values, which align with those of the University.
Staff and students bought T-shirts bearing Nelson Mandela’s face as part of the #Trailblazing fundraising initiative to help students complete their studies, or offered their time and talents to various other causes within and beyond the University.
The University also captured in a video Watch the video! the comments of Grade 11 and 12 learners from across the province, about what they intended to do to honour the legacy of the former president.
The comments come from the 1000-strong group who attended NMMU’s Accounting Winter Schools this holiday, and students from NMMU’s Pinnacle Leadership Programme (holding the letters), who joined them (see photograph).
The University’s first-year Computing Science students also produced a video as part of their #G2KU (Get to know you) project that celebrates NMMU’s diversity on campus. You can Watch their Mandela Day video.
The efforts of the University’s School of Music, Art and Design also took centre stage as the Madiba shirt status, which was unveiled in October last year, was shared in a radio interview. Listen: http://iono.fm/e/311924?autoplay=1
Annually, NMMU encourages staff and students to embrace the opportunity to respond to the call of late Madiba, when he said: “It is time for new hands to lift the burdens – it is in your hands”.
He recognised that every individual has the power to change the world.
