SCIENTISTS from the United States’ National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will deliver the opening and closing talks during a week of space and science-related public talks, which kick off at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University on March 3.
NASA Deputy Chief Technologist Jim Adams’s talk on March 3 is titled “Solving the technological challenges of the Journey to Mars”. On March 9, NASA Visual Strategist Dan Goods will talk about “From comets to giant sea shells: When NASA and art collide”.
In between, three other United States scientists will be intriguing the public with their research. They include Dr Jeanita Pritchett from the National Institute of Standards and Technology on March 4 (“Breaking down barriers in the STEM field”), the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Prof Eric Wilcots on March 7 (“The transformation of galaxies”) and Prof William Edmonson from the National Institute of Aerospace on March 8 (“The big picture: Systems thinking and its importance for science, engineering and innovation”).
"Having international experts speaking on campus allows students, staff and the public to gain knowledge and skills on international topics that they would not normally be exposed to." says Dr Nico Jooste who heads up the university's Office for International Education.
The speakers are all involved at this year’s Scifest Africa, taking place in Grahamstown from March 2 to 8. Scifest’s theme this year, “A matter of time”, will explore the creation, measurement, depiction, experience and (even) end of time.
The United States Consulate General has been working with NMMU’s International Office and the Grahamstown Foundation to bring the scientists to NMMU for the talks.
The lectures take place from 12pm to 1pm at various venues on campus. They are free.
