Following the information session previously held at the institution earlier in the year, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s School of ICT will be having a First Lego League (FLL) Challenge Release official launch workshop tomorrow (September 3).
LEGO ENGINEERS … Pearson High’s “E.V. Lution” team – working on a lego solution – won last year’s regional qualifying tournament for the First Lego League (FLL) challenge.
During this year’s “Animal Allies” challenge theme, teams made up of between two and 10 learners aged nine to 16 will choose and solve a real world problem in the project; building, testing and programming an autonomous robot by using Lego Mindstorms technology to solve a set of missions in the Robot Game.
In each FLL challenge, children learn valuable skills while researching challenges facing today’s scientists since FLL encourages participants to think like scientists and engineers.
South Africa’s economic growth is presently being stifled by a severe skills shortage, particularly in the fields of science, technology, engineering, maths and accounting.
The introduction of the FLL challenge to South Africa, run by NMMU’s School of ICT, is one of several interventions to introduce children to the benefits of science and technology and interest them in pursuing careers in these fields.
The FLL teams, alongside adult coaches, strive to solve problems using research, engineering concepts, presentation techniques and robots. This year the focus is on various interactions between humans and animals such as how dogs assist blind people.
The regional qualifying tournament, hosted by NMMU, will take place on October 21 and 22 at NMMU’s Indoor Sports Centre.
The programme of the workshop will include a presentation of this year’s theme “Animal Allies”, a discussion of the missions on the mat and rules. Teams will also be afforded the opportunity to interact.
