Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) Tourism Management students are set to get the experiential training they need for their studies through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to be signed between the university and Comair Limited tomorrow (September 1).
With Comair Limited being one of the largest local airlines, this agreement will benefit the Diploma: Tourism Management students as it will provide dedicated work stations for students until the end of December 2018.
According to NMMU Tourism’s Head of Department, Dr Shireen Van Zyl, the students who are placed at Comair will be appointed as Customer Service Agents for a period of six months.
The purpose of the MOU between Comair and NMMU’s Tourism Department is to create work station placements for Experiential Learning for both Port Elizabeth and George campus NMMU tourism students.
“As part of the curriculum, third year students have to complete six months of Experiential Learning at tourism-related businesses or organizations in the first semester of their third year of study”.
“The Experiential Learning period acts as a platform to expose Tourism students to the working world, while at the same time enabling them to apply theory to practice,” Dr Van Zyl said.
All students who are eligible to do their Experiential Learning will be able to apply for placement at Comair, and upon selection, will undergo a mandatory training period.
