By October this year, NMMU student Liehandri Nel, 20, will see her designs appear on a range of scatter cushions, sold at selected Foschini and @Home stores nationwide.
Liehandri Nel's winning textile design.
The third-year Applied Design student had the winning textile design at the 2016 Foschini Design Awards.
It is the second year in a row that the title has been won by an NMMU student.
Nel says it took her four days to complete her winning design.
“It hasn’t sunk in yet that I’ve won but I feel very honoured because such opportunities do not come by every day,” she said.
“The prize I look forward to the most is the internship at The Foschini Group (TFG) in Cape Town because working at the @Home offices in June will be like living a dream.”
She also looks forward to receiving the R5 000 TGF shopping voucher.
The Nelspruit born and raised pupil says the most challenging part of the competition was making the distinction between what she likes and what other people may like.
“Designing for the competition was difficult because suddenly it was not only my lecturer and me who had to be happy with the designs but everyone else. However, it was exciting to adapt my personal design style to suit a more commercial space.”
Passionate about interior design, Nel hopes the internship at @Home will provide better insight of how the interior design industry works.
Nel will be flown to Cape Town for the internship, during which she will design a collection of artworks for scatter cushions, which will be sold in selected Foschini and @Home stores.
She will also gain exposure to the entire retail production process and spend time with the Marketing and Merchandise department, ensuring an understanding of every facet of the design industry.
In addition to the internship and shopping voucher, Nel will receive technical and mobile prizes to assist in furthering her successful career in design.
Nel’s lecturer Jean Luyt said she was thrilled to hear of Nel’s win.
“Liehandri deserved to win. She’s a perfectionist and pays special attention to detail.”
