Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s fashion and textile department teamed up with the Reach for a Dream Foundation to make a young fashionista’s dream a reality for a day.
PASSION FOR FASHION … Programme Leader for NMMU’s fashion and textile department Harm Grobbelaar finds a beautiful garment for Silindokuhle, 13.
The foundation, which works with children who are fighting life-threatening illnesses, approached NMMU to help surprise Silindokuhle, 13, who dreams of becoming a fashion designer.
Programme Leader for NMMU’s fashion and textile department Harm Grobbelaar, assisted by several third-year fashion design students, spent time showing Silindokuhle the ins and outs of fashion design.
They explained the process of producing a garment, including measuring, cutting and sewing, and then assisted her in making a sweatshirt branded with the word “Fashionista” in her favourite colours, which she took home as one of her gifts.
“Our department is very proud to be involved with this project, and happy to help in making her dream come true,” said Grobbelaar.
Fashion design student Gugu Peteni, who also acted as a language interpreter, gave a very delighted Silindokuhle her very first lesson on a sewing machine. The teenager already has many designs of her own and was excited to learn how to turn her drawings into garments.
Reach for a Dream also presented Silindokuhle with a laptop which she plans to use for her schoolwork and to research more about fashion.
