Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) welcomes the arrest of a suspect in the case of rape of two of our students earlier this month.

The university trusts that the law will effectively take its course and that the appropriate sanction for this heinous crime be meted out.

This despicable act left the university community reeling and our students concerned about their safety on and off campus.

We appreciate and applaud the students’ courage in reporting this awful crime, which, according to statistics, often goes unreported as the burden of proof is predominantly made to lie with the victim.

We are concerned at the rising number of our students affected by this despicable crime and, through an anti-rape march in solidarity with rape victims, a number of issues were brought to Management’s attention.

NMMU does not take these incidents lightly and has committed to reviewing its security measures and to heed students’ call to create an environment conducive to students coming forward to report any acts of sexual violence against them.
