NMMU BCom (Economics) student Adewale Osifowokan was recently announced as one of the "Top Ten Finest" in the Gradstar Top 100 graduates in SA competition.
NMMU also boasts another four students in the top 100, namely BA Development Studies student Sigqibo Jack, BCom Marketing student Anika Keils, National Diploma in Civil Engineering student Lawrence Mwape and BCom Business Management student Lauren O’Neil.
The Gradstar awards is an initiative by Black Bark productions and Grad Connection and aims to match the country's best future graduates with potential employers and business mentors. It gives participating employers and the top 100 graduates access to each other.
The 20-year old Adewale was born in Nigeria and said he had entered earlier this year as he had always wanted to be part of NMMU’s “Reasons to be Proud" communiques.
"I am a firm believer in hard work and the recognition of hardworking people in whatever field or position. "I [have] noticed that society pays more attention to 'Mr and Miss whatever' or 'most beautiful person in whatever' than it does to hardworking students and topachieving scholars," he said.
"It was a humbling experience to be in the same room with 99 of the brightest minds in South Africa and I got to meet many awesome, talented students," he said. After receiving thousands of entries from across the country and putting the entrants through a rigorous four-phase judging process, South Africa's Top 100 university students were chosen.
BlackBark productions managing director Laura Barker said: "The top 100 will each be connected with a business mentor to further ready them for the workplace."
