ASSOCIATE Professor of Economics Ronney Ncwadi – an expert in his field, with years of experience in the banking sector – is the new head of Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s Department of Economics.
“Prof Ncwadi is a true leader in his field. Under his leadership, the Department will surely develop, with new projects and insights exposing our students to renewal and revival,” said School of Economics, Development and Tourism head Prof Hendrik Lloyd.
Prof Ncwadi – whose research focuses mainly on public finance, small business development and informal sector economics, and econometrics – has been lecturing at NMMU since 2014. Prior to that, he was a director in the Macroeconomic Analysis Unit of the Eastern Cape Provincial Treasury and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Management and Commerce at Fort Hare University.
“I am very passionate about economics as a discipline and am excited that I shall be leading a group of academics who themselves are leaders in their own specialised areas in the field of economics,” said Prof Ncwadi.
“My main objective is to lead the department towards excellence in teaching and producing outstanding undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as rigorous and innovative research.”
The first black academic to be appointed Head of Economics at NMMU, Prof Ncwadi holds a PhD in economics from NMMU and a certificate in Marine Studies from the former University of Port Elizabeth (UPE) and Washington University, United States.
He is a member of several international organisations, including the Pan African Entrepreneurship Research Council, United States, and the Athens Institute for Education and Research, Greece. He is also a member of the BRICS Academic Forum (the acronym standing for the association of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa).
He has had a number of articles published both in national and international journals, and has presented papers at academic conferences both here and abroad.
