NELSON Mandela Metropolitan University’s Student Representative Council today (22 January) launched its #enablingDREAMS campaign, to raise funds for students who qualify for registration, but cannot afford to buy text books or food.
They are also establishing a food bank and book collection programme.
NMMU’s “down payment exemption” means more students have been included for registration this year. It is one of the ways NMMU is assisting academically-deserving but financially-needy students against the backdrop of the #feesmustfall movement.
Many of these students would have qualified for National Student Financial Aid Scheme Funding (NSFAS) but have been turned away due to insufficient funds.
At NMMU alone, close to 3 000 academically-deserving prospective students are at risk of being excluded from Higher Education for financial reasons. Nationally, there are thousands more.
“Some of these students are beacons of hope for their brothers and sisters and some have their families depending on them. Children of domestic workers, children of mineworkers, orphans and children of child-headed households are going to suffer the most,” said SRC President Nicholas Nyathi.
“We call on our student body, staff members and the broader community to heed this call for Ubuntu.”
Donations can be made into the SRC’s NMMU account (details below). The SRC will also be making collections at various traffic lights in and around Port Elizabeth for the next week. There are drop off points for textbooks, food packs and all other donations at the SRC Offices on the University’s North and South campuses.
“These contributions will be collected and delivered to deserving students who are in dire need of them,” said Nyathi.
