A “Social Media for Social Change Workshop” is being offered free to non-profit organisations (NPOs) and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) on 13 November 2015 from 9:30am until 12:30 pm at the Athenaeum, 7 Belmont Terrace, Central, Port Elizabeth.
The workshop intends to inform and educate 20 NPO/NGO representatives on how to make use of social media in a creative, feasible and strategic manner for the sector.
A few individuals who share the same interest in social media for social change, and develop communication strategies for NPOs and NGOs have put their efforts together to offer this workshop for free.
“The idea sprung up, when a few NPOs/NGOs requested a workshop to assist them in understanding social media’s importance in their sector; eg. Amavulindlela Development Centre in Motherwell. The workshop is targeted primarily towards civil organisations and those responsible for administering their social media accounts,” says NMMU lecturer Dr Adelina Mbinjama-Gamatham, who will be facilitating the workshop.
Dr Mbinjama-Gamatham obtained her DPhil in Media Studies in 2014, with a focus on cyber-ethics for social media-communications for non-profits. In her private capacity, she offers non-profits free media counselling. who recently obtained her DPhil in Media Studies with a focus on cyber-ethics for social media-communications for non-profits. The other facilitator is Mr Ntsika Tyatya who will give practical illustrations of using social media to gain stakeholder engagement, generate brand awareness and increase sponsorship opportunities. He manages social media accounts for several brands and non-profits.
The workshop also provides five demonstrators (volunteers) who will walk among attendees offering them practical guidance throughout the workshop. Each demonstrator will have a laptop. Attendees are not required to bring their own laptops but are welcome to do so.
Those without laptops may bring their cellphones. Free Wifi is available at the venue.
A few students from NMMU and CTI are involved with the non-profit sector and engage with their online platforms. Thus, the workshop is also open to students involved in managing social media accounts for the non-profit sector.
The event has been sponsored by Mandela Bay Development Agency, NMMU and AMG Media Consulting.
There is limited space and attendees are encouraged to RSVP to Cleadia Hartzenberg at email@example.com or 073 614 5564.
