SEVENTY-FIVE per cent of NMMU students surveyed were satisfied with NMMU and 79% of them would recommend NMMU to a friend. They rated as very positive the quality and variety of education at NMMU and good professors and lecturers.
These were among the findings of an annual talent research questionnaire survey by international company Universum to which some 2 200 NMMU students responded, together with some 44 000 other higher education students in South Africa.
NMMU students’ positivity towards the university was slightly higher than the national average among students in general towards their institutions.
Top of mind associations with NMMU were Diversity, Excellence and Ubuntu, while NMMU students were characterised as very ethics-driven and aware of values.
NMMU students, to a higher degree than the national student body, rated parents as being the highest influencers as to where they should study. Second was tuition fees and third careers and university fairs.
Important areas that our students would like more information on included financial aid, security on campus and a creative dynamic campus atmosphere.
Fifty-three per cent of NMMU students would choose NMMU again, slightly lower than the average of other students around the country. The rest would have rather chosen to study at the Universities of Cape Town, Stellenbosch and then the Witwatersrand.
Other interesting findings included that NMMU students rated work-life balance as the most important aspect they want in a career, with a future-oriented career second and ethical standards third in line.
Social media was rated as the top source of information about potential careers.
The NMMU students surveyed indicated preferred careers in banking and finance in first place, health care second and educational institutions and scientific institutions third.
Universum’s clients, namely South African companies, rate NMMU among the top five universities in the country and its popularity is increasing, Universum’s Luvuyo Magopeni said.
